Midnight Watch and Midnight Storm Complete Series
Don's Midnight series began in 1993
with Midnight Song and Midnight Intruder. In 1994, he
unveiled Midnight Search, and this year, he completes
the series with Midnight Watch and Midnight Storm. "I
enjoyed creating each painting in this series and
giving a unique midnight mood to each. Using
techniques to capture the glow of moonlit shadows cast
in the night was both challenging and fun. I chose
Midnight Song as my beginning because at that time I
was in love with painting wolves and pups. Midnight
Intruder came to me instantly when my desire to create
a very distinguished background to compliment the
mystery and intrigue of the sleek black panther was
satisfied. For a more abstract view of a deer scene, I
created Midnight Search which depicts a family of deer
huddled in a valley with the church at Holy Hill
behind them in the foggy night. The deer represent the
family in all of us, searching always for answers and
ongoing spirituality. I chose the Barred Owl for its
wisdom of the night you might say. I love the sound it
adds to the night--that seems to say I see all and
know all. Hence the title Midnight Watch. For my fifth
painting,
I wanted to create something dynamic.
I wanted to paint a leopard and used new techniques
and brilliant colors to capture him in the midst of a
fierce Midnight Storm. I have enjoyed creating each
painting in the series and am pleased with them as a
grouping."

Award Winner!
Spirit of the Himalayas: the Snow Leopard
Spirit of the Himalayas: the Snow Leopard, Don's second painting in his Spirit Series, won Artists' Favorite Choice , a $500 cash award, in the 1997 Art Prospect La Jolla Village Art Competition in La Jolla, California.
This national and international show
exhibited its "Top 100 Artists" from September 1
through October 1. The contest allowed all painting
medium. The painting, an original watercolor, is a
contemporary piece featuring an abstract look of the
natural habitat of the Snow Leopard and an almost
ghost-like image of the animal resting there.
Ironically, these are strong, fierce cats that will
not be intimidated, yet, they are still endangered.
Don entered the contest by sending a slide of the
painting. When it was juried into the "Top 100
Artists", he mailed the original painting (via
UPS--strike ended just in the nick of time) to
California for the show and judging which took place
September 2. A reception was held September 12 when
the awards were presented to the winning artist Don
selected this particular painting for entry into the
show after it had received much positive recognition
and praise at the Andersen Gallery in Kenosha last
January.
